Mentor Biography
My name is Aaryan Patel, and I am a Biomedical Sciences major at the University of Central Florida. I am currently in my second year at UCF. I graduated from high school in Orlando, Florida, where I developed a strong interest in science, service, and working with others. One of my favorite classes at UCF has been Quantitative Biological Methods because it helped me better understand how biology, data, and critical thinking all connect. I enjoy classes that push me to think deeper and apply what I’m learning to real-world health and research questions. A professor who has had a strong impact on me is Dr. Neider, along with his graduate student Sean, through my experience in the ACAL Lab. Being part of that environment has helped me grow not only in research and scientific thinking, but also in confidence and curiosity. I’ve really appreciated being able to learn from both of them and see how mentorship, collaboration, and hands-on experience can shape the way you approach science and problem-solving. I decided to get involved with the COMPASS program because I know how valuable it is to have guidance and support when adjusting to college, especially in STEM. College can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at times, and having mentors who understand that can make a huge difference. Through this program, I hope to be someone my mentees can feel comfortable going to for advice, encouragement, and support, while also continuing to grow as a mentor and leader myself.
One piece of advice I would give to incoming students is to not be afraid to ask questions, try new things, and lean on the people around you. You do not have to figure everything out on your own. Everyone’s path looks different, so focus on learning, growing, and making the most of the opportunities around you. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with friends, playing basketball and pickleball, staying involved in service and campus organizations, and finding ways to stay creative and productive outside of academics. I also enjoy working on projects, exploring new opportunities, and doing things that help me keep a good balance between school and life.
